      • Harmonious
Embark on a transformative journey of self-expression and collaboration in this dynamic workshop, blending solo and partner dance practices. Inspired by contemporary and contact improvisation, this session emphasizes creativity, spatial awareness, and developing a personal dance style within a comfortable environment.
In the first part, you'll explore imaginative movement patterns and spatial dynamics using prompts and imagery to inspire creative responses. You'll practice seamless movement transitions and fluidity to enhance expressiveness and control while developing awareness of space and body placement for optimized performance and clarity.
The second part focuses on communication and creativity. Develop awareness and responsiveness by mirroring and complementing your partner's movements from a comfortable distance. Learn leading and following roles to improve non-verbal communication and create harmonious interactions. Engage in exercises that encourage creative interplay and synchronization using shared impulses and spatial awareness.
In the final part, master precise isolation techniques and experiment with layering movements to create depth and complexity in both solo and partner performances. Focus on initiating and responding to movement, maintaining spatial awareness, and exploring dynamic shapes and rhythms. You'll also experiment with choreographic sequences that reflect personal style and artistic vision, fostering individual growth and artistic development while providing opportunities for joyful and meaningful dance interactions within personal comfort zones.

      • Greek Tsifteteli - Vintage Style:
Greek music and dance has long been overshadowed in the belly dance world; not for a lack of
uniqueness or beauty, but simply a lack of representation and understanding. Tsifteteli is,
afterall, a highly improvisational and social dance that is learned so naturally in Greek homes,
but rarely taught in formal settings. Therefore, it falls upon dancers and cultural preservationists
who appreciate its distinctiveness to convey the kinetic themes and musical interpretations of
this dance, which holds such a deep historical significance and continues to influence much of
        modern Greek music today!
My personal goal is to teach tsifteteli in a way that retains its original basis as much as possible,
while also providing options for setting it on the stage so it can be shared and experienced more
and more by audiences far and wide.
In this workshop, we will learn “Vintage style” which, as I call it, refers to the period of time
spanning from the late 1800s to the early, 1900’s, where Rebetika (and Tsifteteli) music thrived
amongst the Asia Minor refugees, the urban working class, and the outlaws and outcasts of
Greek society who were living in the major cities of Athens and Piraeus, and without knowing it,
shaping Greek society at large. We will explore the nuances of its subtle movements, the “male”’
and “female” characterizations, the emotional expressions, social and performative variations,
musical interpretation, and finally, we will learn a short choreography. You will shimmy away
having understood the context, history, movements, expressions and stylization of Greek
tsifteteli. It is time to shine a spotlight on this flirty, gorgeous, powerful dance! Opa!
Open to all levels. Recommended for dancers with a strong understanding of technique.
